  • Duration: Continuous for two years or more with no symptom-free periods longer than two months.

3. Bipolar Disorder (specifically Bipolar II)

  • Symptoms: Periods of depression alternating with episodes of hypomania. Depressive episodes are similar to those of Major Depressive Disorder.

  • Duration: Episodes of depression and hypomania occur at varying intervals, with significant impact on functioning.

4. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

  • Symptoms: Depressive episodes occurring typically during the fall and winter months, with symptoms such as increased sleep, weight gain, and craving for carbohydrates.

  • Duration: Symptoms appear in seasonal patterns, usually improving with the arrival of spring and summer.

5. Postpartum Depression

  • Symptoms: Severe depression following childbirth, characterized by sadness, anxiety, irritability, and difficulty bonding with the baby.

  • Duration: Can begin within weeks of delivery and last for several months or longer if untreated.

6. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

  • Symptoms: Severe mood swings, irritability, depression, and anxiety occurring in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, with significant improvement within a few days after the onset of menstruation.

  • Duration: Symptoms are cyclical, correlating with the menstrual cycle.

7. Psychotic Depression

  • Symptoms: Major depression accompanied by psychotic symptoms such as delusions or hallucinations.

  • Duration: Depressive and psychotic symptoms are present concurrently.
